Business as mission

A changing world calls for innovation.

BAM and the Center for Global Opportunities

Being a missionary has traditionally meant going on deputation, raising support from churches, and then going to a foreign country to serve full time. But it hasn't always been that way. In the book of Acts, the Apostle Paul was a tentmaker. He received limited support from churches and often supported himself. In the twenty-first century a growing number of people are going to foreign countries in non-traditional ways. The term “business as mission” (BAM) has come to describe a variety of approaches, including creative access work in restricted countries, Pauline tentmaking, and foreign entrepreneurship.

Desiring to equip our students for these types of ministry, the CGO has launched a program to sponsor BAM-related summer ministry teams. In the summer of 2017 the CGO will send its first BAM team--a computer engineering education team to South Korea. Computer engineering camps for high school students will provide revenue designed to make this team self-supporting and will also create opportunities for ministry.

Information for Donors

Although the 2017 Korea Mission Team is designed to be self-supporting, it has some significant start-up costs in preparing to go the first time. We are soliciting tax-deductible donations to purchase the equipment, supplies, and initial travel expenses for this and future STEM-related BAM teams. Our fundraising goal for this year is $30,000. With God’s blessing, the revenue generated by the team will replenish this fund and make it available for future BAM teams.

Donations are exempt from income taxes when made payable to BJU and designated for “CGO: Business as Mission.”
